This is a true-to-life story about a grieving young widow and the dysfunctional family she’s married into. Throw in being inseminated with her late husband’s half-brother’s sample due to a mix up in the cryo lab and things get interesting and very complicated. Cait and Lucky develop a relationship over the course of this shared pregnancy, despite Cait dealing with pregnancy hormones and holding tightly to her love for her late husband, untold family truths and a desire for a happy, loving home.
The characters and depictions of coping with bereavement and life in a military camp in the middle of a war zone are believable. Rogenna Brewer has drawn together her experience in the US Navy, years of research and a true gift for storytelling in this moving story about an embittered Marine falling in love with his unborn child and his half-brother’s widow.
